Five Steps to Watercolour

Artist: Amanda Hyatt
Language: English 90 Mins
Format: PAL DVD

Amanda has been a professional artist for twenty five years and is recognised as an outstanding watercolourist and oil painter. In this film she paints watercolours in the beautiful scenery of Lake Como in Italy. Inspired by the views of the lake and surrounding snow clad mountains she paints in several lakeside villages as well as from high above the town of Como. Working on large sheets of watercolour paper, her confident brushstrokes capture the light and mood of her subjects, which include buildings, boats, water and reflection

What an inspiring and great DVD to watch. Really enjoying it and learning a lot, every time I watch it. Seniorart Supply was so generous to gift me with an Amanda Hyatt Palette from Daniel Smith Watercolours, when I ordered the DVD. Thank you sooooo much, so grateful and happy:)

Amanda Hyatt is an extremely very competent watercolourist, who (in the DVD) paints full sheets very loosely in subdued tones. As she states, she has an aversion to primary colours, and most of her hues are mixed in the palette, burnt umber being used extensively to achieve the effect she seeks. Her five steps refer to composition, colour, tone, mood and bringing the picture together. Although some of these are not explained in depth (and probably could not be in the space of a single DVD), she illustrates them using pictures painted around Lake Como in Italy. The final results are very impressionistic, but effective. Her commentary and descriptions are good, and should give the student enough information to emulate her style. Having said that, if you like bright colours or detail, this DVD is probably not for you.

A generous disk, covering a lot of plein air work under sometimes exasperating weather conditions --- but she coped --- and well! She works rapidly and very often her instinctive brushwork may leave the viewer behind, wondering why she did what she did. Her commentary usually is very helpful, especially when dealing with the 5 steps. Highly recommended for more experienced painters who want another challenge to their usual style. It has inspired me enough to book into her next workshop which she is giving next month and only 300km away.
