Winsor Violet (Dioxazine) is a vivid mid-shade purple pigment. When undiluted, it can be used as a deep black. It is a transparent coal tar pigment and was introduced into the Winsor & Newton range in the 1960s.

This violent staining dioxazine purple has a deep inkiness to it creating depth and transparent luminosity to darks and blacks. But when gently mixed with Burnt Umber creates gorgeous cool and warm greys and natural shadows. Use with discretion as it is a bit of a bully and tends to overshadow most pigments, a little goes a long way.
