It’s a rare occurrence for one specific painting medium to have a whole genre of painting associated with it, but Cold Wax Medium is one such medium. Cold Wax Painting is not defined by subject matter nor the degree of realism or abstraction, Cold Wax Painting is unified by artists’ shared interest in experimentation, texture and the physicality of paint layers.

Cold Wax Painting is any type of painting that heavily utilizes Cold Wax Medium into oil colours. In its own way, Cold Wax Painting blurs the line between oil painting and encaustic painting.

Cold Wax medium is a dense paste, it is excellent in creating a variety of textures within a painting. It has a “short” characteristic and gives a clean break off of the brush or knife, retaining the sharp peaks of impasto.

These working properties allow for expressive brushmarks and the ability to carve into paint layers with palette knives. Cold Wax also gives oil colours a beautiful translucent quality, similar to the seductive surfaces of encaustic paintings. Cold Wax Painting utilizes experimental approaches, including the use of brayers, stencils, and textural elements such as bubble wrap or wire screens. The possibilities are endless!

My medium is watercolour. A tutorial showed ‘Gamblin Cold Wax’ being used to rub over the dry painting to preserve it if it is not being framed. My painting was only being mounted on board with a map board frame and placed in a cellophane envelope for sale. I put some of the wax onto a clean white cloth then gently rubbed it over the painting and continued to buff the wax to ensure it had a very thin even coverage. It worked very well. The Watercolour paint was not affected at all. The protective layer of wax also brought the colours out beautifully. I highly recommend this product.

Have tried this just once and it seems to do what it says it will do. Time will tell I suppose.

So far this seems to add a bit of volume to the paint and allow for texture in the paint brush strokes. Have never used this before, so we'll see going forward.

Beautiful buttery cold wax medium: not stiff or grainy. Has a very light bee's wax smell and is made of only two material - wax and OMS. This size (3. 78L ) is very economical and worth it if you are doing a lot of oil and CWM work.
