Watercolour Travel Box Empty 2091

This palette will replace a small Schmincke sketching palette I have used for a number of years. I wanted to try something different. This is slightly longer. Nice to have extra room for washes. I will probably put a few extra full pans where your brush would go as this is my sketching palette. I will get 16 half pans and 4 full pans in the brush holding area, maybe another half pan. At first I thought you could not use the brush area but there are two metal rails that slide out so you can insert the pans. Good deal! Very nicely made...in Italy. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for sketching palette. I have not filled mine yet...as I live in Queensland and I am waiting for the weather to be slightly less humid. This is the second Fome palette box I've purchased (I also own the "bijou" style box with integrated water bottle). They are much heavier duty that the usual metal watercolour palette boxes and are nicely made and finished. PROS: Having three mixing wells in the lid is very handy and I especially like that the inner flap has a plain flat mixing surface and is lipped on three sides to minimise spillage when out in the field. Capacity is good: you can put up to 23 half pans in this box with no special modifications by adding 7 half pans in the central section. (I can only fit 7 half pans, short end to short end in this section, but your mileage may vary – it might be possible with the right pans and/or some sanding to fit 8 half pans, long end to long end and thus get a total of 24.) The central section can also take 4 whole pans plus a half pan, which is a good way of carrying larger quantities of the colours you use most. CONS: The outer rows are fitted fixed metal dividers which means they can ONLY take half pans. That said, the dividers are simply punched from the base sheet and folded up, so it might be feasible to fold some of them back down, creating spaces for whole pans; I have not tried this. A minor negative is that the tin rocks slightly when placed on a table. I recommend resting it on a folded cloth to avoid that issue. Obviously this isn't a problem when holding it in your hand. The issue that arises when using it hand-held, though, is that the lid with the three wells can flop down past horizontal unless you make point of extending your fingers under it. There are two nubs that are clearly meant to stop this but they don't extend enough and they don't actually meet. I solve this problem by taking one of those bar magnets that you get on the back of corporate name badges and attaching it to the base of the box just along the hinge. When the lid is opened it's stopped by the magnet and can't flop.

Really sexy little box, very well constructed and solid and perfect for switching colours around

heads up, this item has 16 metal placeholders for half pans. If you want to use full pans the brush slot in the middle holds 4, plus space for an extra half pan. it's 14.5 X 7 cm approximately and has little feet on the bottom to help stabilize it on surfaces. they appear to be uneven and may click clack when you load your brushes or mix on it so bear that in mind. nothing that can't be overcome with a cloth underneath or by holding it with the finger loop underneath. otherwise it's what you'd expect from DS, heavyweight and sturdy.

What a great palette! I got 16 half pans and then realise I could have another whole row to be used if I didn't want to put small pens or anything. Great! This could hold up to 24 half pans. Sturdy material. Has thumb ring at the end as well.

Excellent product; great for work in the field, small and plenty of colours

Excellent! I can fit in some extra half or whole pans in the middle space instead of a travel brush or pencil. Hard case, seems durable and feels solid. Really impressed by the white finish on the flat interior mixing palette lid. This is somewhat coarse to prevent running/pearling. Deep wells in the lid make for good washes. Great! Four of five stars because the lip of the lid goes over the edge of the box on one side if a little pressure is applied. Recommended.
