The Arches brand
The Moulins d'Arches turned to the production of high quality paper for the period's most famous writings and most beautiful art publications. The mill thus printed incunabula (the name given to the first printed books) such as the "Chronique de Gutenberg" by Durer. Also printed on Arches paper was the "Description of Egypt" commissioned by Napoleon I upon his return from his Egyptian campaign; the work was used by the royalty from 1809 to 1828.
Since 1492, Arches has stood for professional quality for artists. Its pure cotton products, mould-made in the traditional way, have a natural grain which resembles that of hand-made paper. This process also produces a more stable paper, whose form is not significantly altered when wet, because of the excellent distribution of its long cotton fibres. Arches Watercolor papers also boast unique sizing using natural gelatine, giving the paper incomparable resistance to scratching and exceptional rendering of colours.

I use both Arches 185gsm & 300gsm papers in rough as I find my style - impressionistic - is emphasised by the rough surface allowing all brush strokes from wet in wet - moist to damp - and dry, to have maximum impact. Pigment distribution within the surface is one of the great features of this paper thus allowing for granulation when the paper is angled. This allows for pigment to run downwards and distribute throughout the shape in a professional manner. I always use Arches papers for all my work. Best choice.

This is the best paper at the best price. My only wish is that it would qualify for the free shipping on offer as everything I buy is online and has to be posted.

I ordered the lighter weight paper as the price of the heavy weight Arches rough paper was just getting to be too much for me. As there was a generous sale on it has proved to be quite economical and i am sorry i did not order more at the time. It is reasonably rough but not overly so and seems to endure a fair amount of painting over and over despite how thin the paper seems and definitely needs stretching. An unexpected benefit was that the paper comes sandwiched in two sheets of masonite which can act as a place of storage - also the order came incredibly quickly. It takes the side of the dry brush beautifully and the sizing seems about right - the paint sinks in but not excessively so that a lot of overglazing is required.
