Description

Gamblin Cold Wax Medium a mixture of natural beeswax (wax pastilles), Gamsol and a small amount of alkyd resin. The term “cold” in Cold Wax Medium and Cold Wax Painting refers to the fact that heat is not required for working with this wax medium – as it dries by solvent evaporation (Gamsol), rather than the cooling of the wax, as in encaustic painting. As the Gamsol evaporates out of the medium, the soft wax hardens to the density of a beeswax candle.

Unlike other Gamblin painting mediums, which increase the flow and gloss of oil colors to varying degrees, Cold Wax Medium makes oil colors thicker and more matte.

Cold Wax Medium is made from naturally white, pure beeswax. Formulated to knife consistency, Cold Wax Medium makes oil colors, Gamblin Mediums, and Gamvar thicker and more matte. It can also be applied alone as a matte varnish.

My medium is watercolour. A tutorial showed ‘Gamblin Cold Wax’ being used to rub over the dry painting to preserve it if it is not being framed. My painting was only being mounted on board with a map board frame and placed in a cellophane envelope for sale. I put some of the wax onto a clean white cloth then gently rubbed it over the painting and continued to buff the wax to ensure it had a very thin even coverage. It worked very well. The Watercolour paint was not affected at all. The protective layer of wax also brought the colours out beautifully. I highly recommend this product.

Have tried this just once and it seems to do what it says it will do. Time will tell I suppose.

So far this seems to add a bit of volume to the paint and allow for texture in the paint brush strokes. Have never used this before, so we'll see going forward.
